drive shaft and gear help
i have a 355 sbc with a 700r4 i think it might have the stock rear end gears but im not sure i blew my transmission out and was thinking of replacing it with a th350 the one i have is a short tail so i was wondering how long is a stock drive shaft for a 83 camaro and what rear end gears should i run when i change to a th350 thank you

Re: drive shaft and gear help
Few things if im not mistaken if you use a long tail shaft TH-350 you can use your old drive shaft but with the short tail shaft you will need a longer one. I dont know off hand what the leingth of a stock 83 drive shaft is off hand though best off just measuring it. Course ide just keep the 700r4 but thats my oppinion. As far as gear that depends on its purpose. Without an overdrive curiseing on the highway with anything steeper than 3.42 will be a nightmare. The lower numerically the gear the better it will be in terms of driveability on the highway and top speed but the steeper the gear the better acceleration. What you value most will decide which end of the spectrum of gears you gravitate to. Personally ide go with some 3.23 to give the best performance while not being absolute murder on the highway.

Just rebuild your 700R4, or you can pick one up from TCI or just about any reputable trans shop that can handle whatever power you're giving it...and you'll get the overdrive to boot. If you want to go with the Th350, that's your choice, however, at a 1:1 final gear in the transmission, 3.42 rear gears and 26" tall tires, you'll be running 3000 RPM at 65mph (Borrowed from my 4 speed Camaro). With .76:1 final transmission gear, 3.73 gears and 26" tall tires, I'm getting 2600 RPM at 70MPH (My 700R4 in the Trans AM).
