Re: Engine type and year?
Engine code or block casting?
Only real way of identifing a block is to read the the 2 or 3 letter engine code stamped on the block pad at front.
That will tell what ci /year /model /Hp / trans
Casting # means little as same block casting may have been used for many different configurations but can give a guide as to age of engine .The famous "010" block was used for 300+Hp HiPo engines and 180Hp truck engines

That number that you gave looks more like a partial VIN, as opposed to an engine block casting number, and that's why you probably can't find it on the net!! That won't help you in your quest, see vetteoz's picture in post #2, and get the engine seller to give you those numbers, the real important number is the right hand one in the picture!! That number will tell you what it came out of, and what size it is!! There can sometimes be a few engines related to the code, as some codes get reissued, so it's also important to get the block casting date!! The other important number is the block casting number, which is found on the drivers side rear, on the bellhousing flange, that will seal the deal!!
A breakdown of the engine code (T0427HK) in the right hand side of the picture reveals T=Tonawanda Engine Assembly Plant, 04 = Month Assembled, 27 = Day of Month Assembled, HK = 327CID/250 HP
Get the numbers to find out for sure before you go!!

cheers guys. the seller claims to be unable to find any other numbers but states its a 78 engine.
Think i'll give it a miss as the 400miles round trip for nothing would be a right pita

Re: Engine type and year?
Your probably not missing out on anything, other than a big problem, like you said, a right PITA!!
400 miles round trip, to find out it's a boat anchor, not my idea of fun!!
At least now your armed with the knowledge of what, and where to look, for your info on the block!! Get the next guy to send you some good clear digtal pictures of the numbers, so that you can decipher them, and maybe the next 400 mile trip that you are comtemplating going on, won't be for nothing!!
