A/C burning smell
A/C burning smell
Hey guys,
I was just driving home from dinner in my '92 RS 305 and my lady friend noticed a burning smell, which grew as I drove on. It smelled like burning plastic of some sort and did not go away as long as the car was running. Hell, even after I turned it off, if I turned the keys so that the fan would blow I would get the same smell. I looked for smoke, but found none.
There are a couple things to maybe mention before concluding this
1. The fan switch has been a pain and does not work, but the fan itself does work when I turn on the AC. So, after trying to fix/ get it fixed a couple times, I just trained myself to turn on the AC when the temp needle hits the middle and leave it on til the needle goes back down around "200." But now, even in the off position it (the AC and the fan) is still operating. This isn't right. Could this have something to do with the problem?
2. Last year I replaced the heater core and in the process of doing so I accidentally broke a small tab on the heater core cowling that contacted the ducting pads which move according to whatever heat/colling setting is chosen. Could this have something to do with the problem?
3. I thought that since the AC settings dont seem to be working properly anymore and a strong synthetic burning smell is coming thorough, that it could be an electrical problem?
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know
Thanks!

The heater core does not get hot enuff to burn plastic.
It sounds like the mode selector in the HVAC panel is defective.
Verify with a voltmeter ▬ then replace the switch.

If People Drove Any Slower They’d Be Going Backwards
When you see fog or “running” lights on in good weather beware. Low performance driver ahead.
How bout those nitwits too scared to drive without headlights in the daytime
and the nitwits that need headlights for a little rain

Re: Air Smokeditioning
Thank you so much!
There are also a couple other things: now that I noticed the burning smell I have noticed that even when the selector is set to off, the periodical click sound and corresponding idle fluctuation that occurs normally when I have the AC set to on happens. Also, the AC/heat se;ector got jammed and I had to wiggle it loose. Do these things correspond with what you think it might be?

The click and idle fluctuation is due to the AC compressor cycling, it’s normal.
The mode selector might have jammed if the compressor switch melted ▬ visually inspect.
