GEN V 454 guys: cam question/rocker studs

i am looking into a small cam for my GEN V 454 TBI. i was recommended a summit K1301 or an edelbrock 2162. will either of those (or any cam) work with the stock non-adjustable rockers (net-lash) or will any cam swap require a conversion?

i have also thought about a cam from 454HO which came on some GEN V 454 crate engines. i think one of these would work with the stock rockers, because they came that way?

Re: GEN V 454 guys: cam question/rocker studs

What heads do you plan?

I'm learning alot myself, and I know it's important to select a valve train for maximum air flow for the heads // intake // fuel delivery.

IMHO if I were doing a basic re-build & wanted a lil more oomph, then I would consider one of the mentioned cams.

If I wanted alot more all around oomph, I would think about getting screw-in studs, guide plates, etc, & make it an adjustable valve train.

Some ppl like the non adjustable since they are a tighten-to-spec-&-go.

just using the stock oval port heads. im nor really looking for a ton of power, everything else is stock, just want a bit more low end power, and besides i think some of my lobes are going flat.

so my stock rockers are no problem, just tighten em down to the tq specs?

Re: GEN V 454 guys: cam question/rocker studs

I've never had a non-adjust valve-train. IDK what the procedure is.

I've been told some ppl like them since once they're set, they don't need to be re-adjusted even after break-in of the cam.
Pretty much a " Set it & forget it ".

Sorry I can't tell you how to do it. Some one with non-adjustable valve train will surely check in!!

I'm envious-HaHa- you'll be enjoying Bigblock driving, & we're still deciding what we want from our Bigblock!!LOLol

Best of luck & hang in there

Re: GEN V 454 guys: cam question/rocker studs

GenV heads are peanut port, not oval port. They have a non adjustable valve train. When switching to a more aggressive cam, the valve train should be switched to an adjustable style. This means changing the rocker studs to a changeover stud which has a 3/8" base and 7/16" top so you can use standard BBC rockers. Chances are the factory pushrods will be close enough that you don't need to change their lengths.
