Re: random wire i need to know about
It's the detent cable or the TV cable - depending on what transmission this is from. If it's a TH350 or TH400, it's called a detent cable - it it's a TH700R4 then it's a TV cable.
The difference - a TV cable precisely opens and closes the Throttle Valve in the transmission (hence the name TV cable), and because of the precise nature of insuring this valve is opened accordingly to properly shift the transmission, it has to be geometrically correct and adjusted just right - otherwise a TH700R4 can burn up in a hurry if its not properly aligned and adjusted.
A detent cable kinda does the same operation, but is not nearly as precise.
Either way, it gets connected to the throttle linkage - if it's a TV cable, you'll need the correct geometry corrector if using an aftermarket carb, along with the proper throttle cable bracket to make sure everything is lined up and geometrically correct.
Hope that helps.

I'm no expert with the older detent cables - it effects the shifting of your transmission - I wouldn't run without it connected. It connects to a stud on your carb linkage - ask in the transmission board if there are particulars for connecting it - since it's a TH400, I don't think it's as critical to have the geometry or the adjustment as precise - but check with someone who knows.
