white smoke...
So i just got my car running good for the first time since i bought it, its a '83 z28 with a stock L69 305. There is some white smoke from the exhaust when i start the car but it stops after a few seconds, but that didnt really concern me. As soon as i shut my car off theres a good amount of white smoke all around the engine and i dont know where its coming from. I just did valve cover gaskets, but now its burning oil from somewhere else. If anyone has any ideas let me know. I was planning on putting the car on the road this week but this definitly put a damper on things.

Re: white smoke...
It definitly smells like oil so i have no idea. I left out a little info on the car haha. Its been off the road for about 15 years, and only been started a handfull of times since then. The car got its first oil change in about 11 years yesterday. It was all there when i bought it, it looked like a mess though. I just got the engine back together like 3 days ago, it sounds strong when its idling and when i drive down the street and back. I just dont know whats causing all the smoke.

If its cooler in MA like NY the "white smoke" could just be condensation evaporating out of the tail pipe. I know that my DD has been doing it the last couple of days because it has been getting cold at night but pretty nice during the day.

Re: white smoke...
haha ya its been pretty much the same type of weather in MA, but im not worried about the exhaust smoke because it stops after about 10 seconds. Im worried about all the smoke my engine makes when i shut the car off. If i let the car run for a minute or two then shut it, my engine starts smoking but its not overheating. Could this have something to do with the fact that the engine has been running for awhile?

Re: white smoke...
could there be a possibility of my rear main leaking onto my exhaust and making all the smoke?

Are you sure it oil on the exhaust? It could also be leaks at the rear cyl head/intake corners (where block china rail meets intake.)

Re: white smoke...
Since my car is still all stock it has all the egr/emission crap in it, I havent been able to pinpoint exactly where the oils leaking from. i might just bring it to the shop down my street and have them take a look.
