water temp gauge

i have an 1988 iroc ,......anyone HAVE or ever figure out WHY? the temp gauge jumps up to the high reading when cranking the engine over .....then back to .....way below the scale when started ....and stays there ....is it the gauge or the temp probe ...or the wiring ? seen this on a couple of other camaros in the past THANKS

Temp Gage Is Nervous

It jumps to high as a self test when starting the car.

If you’re saying it never moves above cold when you’re driving awhile, the sender, or wiring to it, is bad.

You can test your wiring by grounding the temp sensor wire against the engine block. If the gauge pegs at over 260 degrees then your wiring is fine and its a sensor issue. If, while grounded, the gauge still doesn't want to move... its a wiring issue.
