Trying to set timing....

I'm starting over with my timing as its possible its out of wack. The problem I'm having is when I disconnect the 4 pin connector the car stumbles then stalls. I've read that the car should at least run abliet like crap when you do this. I want to ensure my base timing is dead on at 6 degrees, before I start taking apart the carb. Is it possible that the timing is out to the point where it won't run without the 4 pin connector attached? I have the dizzy marked so I can mess with it. I am going to be moving the dizzy lil by lil once I've established whether the timing is too far retarded or advanced.
