power steering pump replace or rebuild?

I'm in the process of cleaning up all the accessories to bolt back up to my engine and wondering if I should buy a rebuild kit or just buy a whole new pump and reservoir. The rebuild kit is $14 and the whole new pump and reservoir is $47. Any suggestions?

Also, why is it so bad to use a 3 jaw puller to remove the power steering pulley? Thats what I used and had no apparent problems.

Thanks!

Re: power steering pump replace or rebuild?

I decided to just go with the rebuild kit, came with all new o-rings and seals, was pretty easy to do.

When I got everything put back together I found out why you shouldn't use a three jaw puller, apparently it can bend the pulley! With some pursuasion I got it all straightened out.

Re: power steering pump replace or rebuild?

Yeah, they make a special puller just for GM pump pulleys. Clamps on the groove in the pulley hub and gets a hellacious bit on it, too. Install tool is also very handy to have to put it back together (and is a totally different tool from the puller).

Congrats on a successful rebuild. More than I would have tackled. I would have advised spending the extra bucks on a complete unit.

You should consider a how-to write up on the pump rebuild. Sounds simple enough that most could do it, but scary enough most wouldn't try.

Re: power steering pump replace or rebuild?

did the rebuild kit come with bearings for the PS pump?

on my PS pump, I think the bearings are going, got a small bit of in-out movement on the pulley.

No, it didn't come with any bearings. The reason I rebuilt mine was because it was leaking ps fluid and looked terrible.

to answer my own question about why NOT to use a three jaw puller, see:
