power steering pulley is way off

I am in the process of finishing up my engine rebuild and when I bolted up the power steering pump it is way off. It almost seems like there I lost some spacers or something. It looks like I could use some washers to get it lined up. Does this sound like the right way to fix this or am I missing something?

Are you sure it's pressed on all the way? Sometimes they stop moving before you get them fully seated. Shimming the pump back is not the correct way to solve it. I usually heat the pulley up then quickly press it on...even then it might take me two tries to get it all the way on.

I'm pretty sure its on all the way, you can see in the pictures the pulley is flush with the shaft on the front and there isn't much space in the back. Does anybody have a pic of their power steering pump and how it lines up?

What's up with that metal collar sticking way out behind the pulley? The pulley should be damned near touching the mounting bracket in the back.

I don't remember that big chunk of metal there last time I did a serpentine pump pulley swap.

thats the neck of the pump itself, I don't know how else it could can go togehter. I guess it looks like I'll just have to take it off and take a look.

Re: power steering pulley is way off

So after removing the bracket and power steering pump again, and taking the pulley on and off a bunch of times, I was still stuck. Even if I put a bunch of washers in there as spacers it just wouldn't line up. I was looking through some pics I took when I started this whole process of pulling the engine 8 months ago. Then it hit me

I asked a question on here a couple of weeks ago, why can't i use a three jaw puller, it seemed to work just fine. The real reason is because the pulleys are way soft and this can happen. See pics!

Anyway new pulley for $13 bucks and we are back in business!!!
