FUEL TANK DILEMMA

I own a 83 Z28 whose fuel tank ( with fill nozzle attached ) finally rotted out, I took it to the machine shop to get it vatted and re-sealed but they said it was to far gone, so I got rid of it. I recently found one in the junk yard. Out of the same year camaro and same tank with fill nozzle attached. I took it to the machine shop and had it vatted and re-sealed, looks brand new. I installed the tank, it goes in pretty easy the grooves on the tank line up with the grooves on the body, the tank straps go on fairly easy, and the sending unit fuel lines, line up with the fuel lines to the engine....But the fill nozzle is way below the gas door, I tried re-positioning the tank but to no avail. So my dilemma is....can I cut the fill neck and use tubing or flex hose attached with clamps, or can I bend the neck, or can I cut it and get it re-welded???? Also if the tank came out of the same year of car why is the fill neck so off??? Any advice and or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!!

how far down? its pretty easy to bend the neck without damaging it, as long as u dont crank too hard on it.

Re: FUEL TANK DILEMMA

it should be the same . as a last resort you can cut the neck and use rubber hose to connect it. almost all cars and trucks have a section of rubber hose to connect the filler neck to the tank.

it should have a slightly bendable section,but..........i dont know how hard i would try to bend anything 20+ years old that i cant easily or cheaply find another one of.

Re: FUEL TANK DILEMMA

i had to bend my neck when dropping the tank, and i had to bend it right back to put it back in. it bent fine and didnt crack, but your right, i wouldnt have used much more force that i did.

Re: FUEL TANK DILEMMA

It is probably bent from getting it out & just needs to be bent back into place.

Re: FUEL TANK DILEMMA

Thanks for the advice and suggestions....But how do I exactly bend it with out cracking it or kinking it??? I know...very careful right? Do I bend it before I install it or do it while it is installed....Also what might I use to support the bend? Oh yeah, it is about 4 inches off.

Re: FUEL TANK DILEMMA

itll probably be easier to bend with it out. my suggestion is set the tank flat on the ground, have someone hold it to keep it from moving, grab the neck, and pull slowly, try not to jerk it but use a constant steady force.
