327 or 350?

I joined this club about a week ago because I plan on getting a 3rd gen Camaro sooner then later and I was wondering what you guys would prefer a 327 or a 350. I like the 327 because they are high RPM motors but a 350 is really easy to make fast and you can do a bunch of stuff with the 350s. I was wondering what you guys would choose?

Re: 327 or 350?

A 7% difference in displacement does not a huge difference make. Either will produce good power.

I personally prefer a 327 because with 6" rods you can get a perfect 1.85:1 rod/stroke ratio, but I obsess over little details and I'm not super concerned about making the maximum power I can for the dollars I spend. A 350 is a better bet (unless you have a 327 on the cheap) because it can make more power with less revs. Chevy small blocks don't like RPMS that much. It's one the reasons the 383 is popular, it's cheaper and easier to make a bigger engine than a higher revving one.

Re: 327 or 350?

With the same parts a 350 will make more power.

A motor's revving capabilities are determined by the valve train and camshaft, not the stroke. Pretty much ALL smallblock chevies have oversquare bore/stroke ratios I think. Even a 383 with a 3.75 inch stroke has a 4.030 inch bore which means the bore is bigger than the stroke.

There's no reason to build a 327 over a 350 barring displacement limits to compete in certain classes. Both will make power, but the 350 will make a little more, and be a little more streetable, and be a little cheaper

Read the WHOLE thread and make up your mind. I've decided it's all mysticism and hot rodder superstition keeping the "magic" of the 327 alive.

And make no mistake, for the most part, a 327 and 350 are the same motor. They're both smallblock chevies with the same aftermarket parts and so forth. Cams/heads/intakes/headers/etc will all interchange no problem. Just with less displacement you make a little less power. You can take a 350 block and destroke it to a 327 if you want.

Re: 327 or 350?

350 is just a stroked 327.

Making power at high rpm doesn't mean much unless you're building a dedicated race car. I spin my BBC to 7400 so displacement size does mean much. For the street, an engine will rarely see above 5000 rpm so building an engine with a 4000+ powerband is a waste of money.

Given the way my car is geared, and engine that swings cleanly to 6500 rpms with broad power would be nice.
