starter help

I put in a new starter in my 91 camaro with a 305. But it is still making a clicking sound when I try to start it a few time then it starts without any problems. Any ideas, thanks

Re: starter help

the clicking usually means that there is enough power to join the switch in the solenoid but not enough to turn the starter.

have the battery tested. if the starter is new and the solenoid is attached, i doubt its bad. but anything is possible i suppose. i would definitely start with the battery though.

it may not be bad, but needs a charge.

Re: starter help

I am having a similar issue on my 91 Formula/305 TBI...I just changed the starter (put in a reman'd Champion)...and got a few clicks and then engine started fine...I hooked up my battery to a charger and it was reading a bit low...so, I charged the battery..and gave the battery cable connectors a good cleaning with a wire brush..also cleaned the battery terminals with the wire brush...that improved the starting a lot...

but, I found out that my battery cable connector bolts (8mm...5/16") are stripped/rounded off and the battery cables do not look that great...I am thinking of putting on new cable ends...and maybe even replacing the cables...

Re: starter help

Let me know if that solves the issue. I checked the battery and it was still reading good numbers. I alternator was running low so I exchanged it with the warranty, it is a brand new alternator. So maybe the wires could be bad like you said.

Re: starter help

A little different than the above problem, but when you turn the key to start, you get one "click" (possibly the plunger engaging the starter gear to flywheel) then everything dies. No power, like if battery is dead. In order to get everything back on, I have to unplug both terminals then plug them back in.

I have replaced the solenoid because it was cracked, plunger moves starter gear just fine, replaced battery for it didn't have enough amperage, hooked it all back up, went to turn the key, and CLICK, then everything dies.

I can jump start the car just fine. Hooked it up to my 04 suburban and everytime, it turns over and starts, but on the Camaro's own power, it just clicks once and then the circuitry dies and then I got to go through all that again with the battery. 4 days I've been chasing this crap down and have gotten nowhere! Please help!

In case it matters, I have the 305 TBI with manual transmission.
