crossfire problem
i have the 305 with crossfire injection.. and heres my problem:
i bought an 85 camaro for $1200, with one problem. when you start it its fine, the first time. then you have to reset the timing for it to start again. whats my problem and how can i fix it?
and then i must ask, would it be possible to get rid of the crossfire? and what would be the pros/cons and what would it take to do it?
thanks in advance,
-spike

Re: crossfire problem
I don't much about Crossfire. In fact I've never seen it up close. I've only seen it in some classic Corvettes on display at auto shows. As for removing it, yeah, you can. You can switch to a carb, TBI, TPI, or just about anything. As for pros and cons, I don't know Crossfire well enough to intelligently debate that. I know that TPI and TBI can probably make more power. Plus there is more support for it. Crossfire wasn't super common during the two years it was available in the F-bodies.

A few photos might be interesting. The 305 with the Crossfire TBI system was only on 82-82 Camaros & Firebirds. So if you have an 85 with a Crossfire TBI on it someone modified the engine or changed out the engine.
If you have to keep resetting the timing, how are you doing that? I am wondering if you don't have a mechanical problem somewhere in the engine. Is the distributor bolted on tight? I would think that if the timing chain is slipping, that it would clearly be a mechanical problem.
Yes, you can remove the Crossfire TBI if you want to. There are quite a few guys on this board who have done that. Most of them also install a 350 at the same time.
To remove the Crossfire TBI, you have to remove the TBIs the intake manifild cover, the intake manifold body, the ECM, most of the wire bundle going to the ECM, the TBI fuel supply and return lines. Then you have to replace most of the stuff you removed. I haven't do this conversion and don't think I will. I do have an 82 Z28 the Crossfire TBI on it.
So if you do have an 82 or 83 with the Crossfire TBI and decide to remove it, PM me as I would like to get a few of the parts. Just PM before you start, because most folks just destroy the parts I want, thinking they are of any value.
Also, If you go to the TBI forum here on thridgen, there are a few folks over there who might be able to give you a better idea what might be wrong with your engine.
Do you really have an 85 with a 305 Crossfire setup in it, or is it an 82 or 83?

Re: crossfire problem
i got her running. beyond everything i could have imagined, heres what was going on...
two wires were touching and shouldnt be.. taped them, she fires every time.. i was astounded.. and had no clue why that would have had anything to do with it.. or maybe it didnt and it just decided to run.. all i know is.. with a lil help from a friend.. she runs..
and about the 85..
the person i bought it from got it with no title, and was junking an 85, so he switched all the numbers over and then there ya go.. it has a title..
