What are some common causes of headlight failure?

I have a Trans Am and the headlights won't pop up. If I manually open them and then turn the light switch off they both pull down no problem. What would be a cause of this kind of thing?

Typically the nylon gear inside the headlight motors has practically turned to dust by now. The head light motors need to be rebuilt. You can get the kit to do this at a number of the site sponsors. TDS is one of my favorites for this sort of thing.

But would that explain why they both would shut perfectly but neither of them would open for the life of them?

I think there is something like a coil spring in there. I had a firebird a long time ago and one would go up but not down. I put a little pressure on the top that turns and that would make it go down.

Yes. I had a Trans Am that had this problem. The lights would drop on their own but I had to raise them manually. When I opened the headlight motors something akin to powered cheese came out.

Ok well I figured it out, the headlight switch is bad-ish. If you don't push it in ALL the way they'll pop up and stay up so I'll hunt for a new switch
