Please help with rookie questions.

I was on another camaro board and only got one response. Hopefully it's more helpful here. I just purchase an 88 camaro with a 305 TBI. The TBI unit was rebuilt. I went to go through an emissions check today and they didn't even test it because it was smoking. Not sure the color of the smoke because I didn't see it. I ordered a new head gasket set along with the valve stem seals. Do you guys think this will fix it, or do you think it might be the piston rings. I can do a compression check, what is the compression supposed to be at? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Please help with rookie questions.

You need to do a wet and dry compression test dry to check for the valve and wet with oil to check for bad rings.

What is the difference between a wet and dry? I've always just plugged up the tester and did the check... Which method is this? Sorry for the dumb question, but I have to learn somewhere.
