bare bones head gasket change

Back story:
About a month bought a 92 camaro RS with a 305 and 5 speed project car. She is now slated for a drift build, however, I am not sure if I am going to keep the car due to lack of coilover options. I will probably get to car back up to about stock, drift it this season and then decide.

Info:
The odo shows 135k but stopped working a few years ago. I have recites going back about 13 years. Oil was changed regularly but that’s about it. I know the car has been over heated a few times not sure how bad. The drivers side head is slowly seeping coolant onto the intake manifold and the front of the block, the passenger side is similar but less. The exhaust does not smoke at all. There is no coolant in the oil, but the coolant was straight brown until I flushed it a bit back and it does not seem to be getting any oil in it now. I have not done a compression or leakdown test

Task at hand:
I am trying to do a bare bones budget head gasket job, replacing the bare minimum. What I want to know is can I get away with just replacing the gasket itself and ignore everything else like taking the heads to a machine shop to do a valve grind and seals, and just bolt it back together if I make sure the heads are not warped (check with straight edge) and the push rods are straight, (checked on a glass surface) head bolt are cheap enough insurance I plan on replacing them. I figured on stock replacement gaskets, any reason I should go with anything else? do I need to do the intake manifold gasket at the same time? I am really trying to get this done this weekend and get this car ready for the next event on june 6th.

I am trying to spend the minimum here because I have other bare bones basic that need my money asap like tires, more wheels shocks springs brakes bushings a seat entry feed travel expenses etc. so “might as well” is a no-go here. This is kind of a temporary solution because if I decide to keep the car, I will probably get aluminum heads or at least go back and do it right this fall or winter

thanks

If you want to go cheap then buy a head gaskets, intake gasket, valve cover gaskets and a tube of rtv. Then unless something looks really bad dont look too hard and just slap it back together.

also, read more about third gen f-body's suspension before you discard the car for lack of coil over options

Re: bare bones head gasket change

ok looks like i may end up taking the heads to a shop, anyone out there know a shot anywhere near Jacksonville nc?

i have read about everything i can find on 3rd gen suspension. the only real coil overs i have found that are not built for drag are the spohns and they are topping out at 600# spring rate up front, i am looking at more like 1100. and i would still be koni yellows up front. is there another manufacture or set up i am missing?

dont get me wrong i like the car and there are a few people out there making them work. i just do not wont to spend a bunch of money and year developing a car that will end up being a disadvantage to a 240 with a few grand and 6 months.

thanks
