Painting an engine

Not sure if this belongs here or in another area but figured I'd post it here.

I am painting my engine comparment. I am using regular base coat/ clear coat paint. My question is, can I use this on my engine block and intake manifold, or do they get too hot? Would using high temp primer make any difference?

Re: Painting an engine

I wondered this myself, and recently tried it on my thermostat housing/neck to see if it handles the heat. So far, so good. I used a high heat paint and sprayed Nason clearcoat over it. 700+ miles later and it hasn't peeled off from the heat. I suspect basecoat with clear on top would handle the heat fine, but I don't feel like pulling the engine again just to repaint everything with base/clear.

Edit: I would use a high heat primer and go ahead and spray it with base/clear. The part I sprayed clear over has seen temps over 220* and been fine.

Cool. Thats good to hear. I decided that I am going to try it regardless. I got the paint for free. I just need to buy primer and clear. The paint is a Ford color. Bright atlantic blue. Its a little lighter than I wanted, but should look nice. If I dont like it, then atleast all the body work will be completed so painting over it later on shouldnt be too hard.
