305 wont start..slow cranking
hey im just gettin my 84 camaro running well trying to but it wont even attempt to run, it just sounds tired as it rolls over and smokes outta the carb every about 5=7 seconds of rolling over,
im getting spark, im putting fuel right into the carb, i figure the timing is out (but set as close to zero as we could), but the slow cranking is getting to me, we have it boosted to my sisters bf 06 sierra and didnt even speed it up, its a brand new starter, and the 305 is higher milage and has not run in a while any tips? im stumped and have no one to ask advice

sounds like you need to do a compression test....
If I recall correctly...smoke from the carb would tell me that valves were not seating properly and allowing blowby. Have you lashed the valves?
Possibly overlashed. I had an identical experience with mine. Stupid me did it twice because when I came back to first valve again it had gone seemingly loose. Learned from that one. Fortunately I had only just gone a little where no damage was done to pistons or valves. I had fire and smoke flying out my carb. Shut that down real quick.

Also read in that thread about timing. 0 degrees is wrong...should be 6.
I'd think that would inhibit crank and start if timed wrong.

Re: 305 wont start..slow cranking
my sisters boyfriend is going to get me a compression test, but lashing the valves...dont want to sound like a noob but i dont know so im gonna ask, but what is all involved with that, turn all the rockers down till it gets tight then half turn back? but makes sense about it smokeing when i stop cranking it over... but the slow cranking, my clutch is working and starter is new, could it just be cause it has been sitting and just needs to be reworked? i got all day tomorow to play with it...
