1991 Camaro rs problem

I bought a 1991 Camaro rs v6 and it dies on me.

yesterday it was running fine though the rpm's where a tad high.

Today in the morning when I started my car the rpm's would jump to 3 and slowly work its way down and hover around 1 and a half.

Now it starts up near two and works its way down to 1 and a half and it just dies. i haven't bothered taking it out but I'm sure it'll run as long as I have the foot on the pedal.

Yes the engine light is on, could it be some sort of sensor?

Check your engine codes all it takes is a paper clip then get back to us with the number or numbers of your codes.

ok, lets see if i can simplify it. the two pins you want to use 6 and 12 should be the last two in the ecm connector. Its attached to the fuse box. 6 and 12 are the last two facing the console of the car.

the codes are displayed as flashes and pauses. the first flash/pause sequence is the code 12. one flash then a pause and two flashes. it will do a long pause, then do it two more times. after that, it will display "hard codes" ones that store on the ecm's memory. you wont be able to get codes for intermittent problems.

for example a code "17" would be one flash, pause, seven flashes, long pause. then it will display the next code whatever that may be. after the last code is displayed, it will display code "12" again. most often it will energize some of the relays but not the fuel pump one but will do the idle air control will come on completely to check idle speed.

i hope that is easier to understand.

Re: 1991 Camaro rs problem

Thank you very much, i know how to interpret the flashes i just didn't know where the hell the paperclip went. I'll go do it and I'll come back.

Right now my car is running like ****, when i go to give it gas it turns off. but not always. sometimes i can drive it for a bit with very little power. i hope it isn't the fuel pump because previous owner told me he had just put in a new one.

Re: 1991 Camaro rs problem

this probably isn't the source of the problem, but there was a safety recall on the 91 Camaro's. go to your chevy dealer and ask them about it. they should ask for the last part of your vin number. they type some stuff into their computer and it tells them if the work has been done.

if it smells like gas, or you can see gas leaking from your tank i highly advise making sure the repair was done.
