3.73's are a fine choice if you want to quicker acceleration and still be able to drive comfortably on the highway. Go for it.

The kit will include bearings, races, seals, and shims you need to set-up the gears. Have you done a gear install before?

Re: can anyone help me out with gear info?

What other mods do you have? Are you currently a 2.73? I'd consider a 3.2(3?) or a 3.42/3.45 before I went for the full 3.73.

Are you running TPI, TBI, or Carb? Do you have a 10 bolt or 9 bolt?

Re: can anyone help me out with gear info?

I may have missed reading it, but is it auto or stick? The only real loss is if it's automatic, then highway speed might not get as best MPG as you can get with say 3.23 or 3.42s, but if it's stick, you should be able to utilize the gears nicely and still maintain maybe a MPG less than average.

You, by-chance, have a link to a good kit to do this?

Check with Randy's Ring and Pinion. They have a website. They sell a master overall kit with all the bearings, seals, and etc.

I second Randy's Ring and Pinion. Have used them several times in the past with good service.
"Get out of the hole" means to launch from a dead stop and accelerate quickly. Even faster than you would with 3.23's or 3.42's.

Most likely you have an "open" (non-posi) rear end now. With 3.73's, you'll have even worse traction than you have now because the passenger side tire will just sit there and spin when you get on it hard.

Differential carriers come in two different "series" - 2-series for 3.08 and lower number ratios, and 3-series for 3.23 and higher number ratio series. 3.73 gears come in both 2- and 3-series styles, so if you just install the gears on your carrier, you will need 2-series 3.73 gears.

If you go ahead and get a posi carrier, then it makes sense to just get a 3-series carrier and 3-series gears.

You can also get a Power Trax conversion unit that installs in place of your open carrier's spider gears. But, a Power Trax costs about the same as a posi carrier.

The cost will be about the same either way (unless you just leave your differential open). If you have a shop install the gears, they can install them on your carrier for the same labor as installing them on a new posi carrier. They might, however, charge you more to install the gears on your carrier and then install the Power Trax (it is simple enough to install that you could do that yourself after they install the gears).

Re: can anyone help me out with gear info?

i just talked to my neibor who has a 84 camaro and a 85 trans am.he told me that he scraped a gta and that he still has the rearend,so im planning on buying that.i kinda figured that the rs has just a limited slip, instead of the limited slip posse that the irocs have.im guessing that the gta has the same with the 342 gears or whatever as the iroc does.now would that be a better rearend to put the 373s in as far as having the limited slip posse?im sure that he will sell me the rearend cheap like maybe even under $100. and i may even go as far as to putting the rearend in for now untill i have the gears and money to get them installed.
