another head /cam question

Found a set of heads that have had work done to them for $300 the work was done by a local and good machine shop. will be taking my block to the same shop.

casting 8827186

Here is some stuff on the invoice

Valve job &magnaflux
install 16 guides

8x stainless 2.02 in manley 10750
metal viton seals
3/8 rocker stud
$355 worth of work plus the cost of the heads.
Now my question it was also noted that he would be using a Hydraulic roller cam.

should i be able to use a Hydraulic flat tappet cam without having to change anything on the heads.

Lastly is this a good deal?

Re: another head /cam question

is this for your 305? If so then no it's a bad idea the compression will be really low.

Either way for the money you are in aftermarket head territory and there's much better choices out there in the price range.

Re: another head /cam question

I made that remark assuming 186 heads are still selling well because of the restoration crowd. You couldn't get a set for less then 200$ last i saw but i could be wrong, it's been a while.

So i was assuming 550-600$ total cost on the heads and that's easily Vortec, or RHS, and getting close to some of the budget aluminum head manufactures territory.

Aluminum Patriots are 795$ assembled from Summit and will be a huge upgrade to the 186 casting.

Re: another head /cam question

If the springs are too stiff you risk wiping lobes. You really should make sure your springs give less than 100 pounds closed and less than 300 pounds open.
