When my car's running there is a grinding-ish noise coming from somewhere in the engine and I can't figure out what it is. I took a video from different angles because I had no idea what angle the camera would pick up the noise at. I'm hoping it's nothing internal. It's like this occational grind/rattle that happens for a few seconds then stops and then reoccurs over and over again. I know a slight rattle comes from the PCV valve but this is louder.

Can I make a suggestion? Remove your belts off the engine. One by one if you can. Then run it each time. It will be ok to run you engine without the water pump for a few seconds especially if the engine is cold. You will eliminate the water pump, alternator, and power steering pump this way, because it sounds like its off the front of the engine. I really doubt its something inside making that noise and still running

 

I just replace the alternator so I know it's not that. I had a buzzing noise and that was the alternator. I do have a new water pump still in the box but I thought that would leak what it was bad? I thought the water pump and power steering were on the same belt but I may be mistaken.

 

The two pumps probably are on the same belt but at least you'll be able to narrow it down. if the sound goes away it will be easier to tell if one of those two pumps are at fault
