Problem with Engine Overheating

So I have this problem where my engine won't stop overheating when I am either stopped at a red light or in town which is understandable, but it still heats up while I am driving on highway or interstate.

It started out with me driving to Omaha from Des Moines and the engine temp was good on the interstate. I had a constant throttle so I wasn't givin it alot of gas or anything and sometimes the temp would go up above the 220 mark. It would go to about halfway between 260 and 220 mark and then later it would go back down. Then later it just keeps about reaching the bottom of the red mark.

I Know my fan runs while the engine is on, it is an aftermarket spal electric fan. I figured it was a thermostat and I had that changed and it still has these problems. I know the antifreeze moves through the radiator because we poured more in and waited for the bubbles to stop and put the cap back on. So I'm thinkin my radiator and water pump are fine, thats why I'm so confused. Any Ideas?

Re: Problem with Engine Overheating

This is just the way these cars are designed. Check the cooling thread. Plenty of solutions.

Re: Problem with Engine Overheating

I am having the same problem. Tried all kinds of tricks in the cooling section. I have replaced everything and still same problem. The one thing I have not tried yet is having my cooling system backflushed with acid. For now, I have it cooled down with a 160* thermostat and two 1/4" holes drilled in it to allow more water through.

Better get yours cooled down soon. The last time mine got as hot as yours I think it burned my hoses, because now the coolant smells burned and there was oily residue on my thermostat, probably from the heat leaching chemicals out of the rubber hoses. That kind of heat will make things start failing all over.
