starter problems

i have an 85 iroc that has a carbed 350 (told it was an 80) with a 700r4 trany. My first starter the whole nose cone broke off. so i installed a second one with shims, it started good for probably the first 15 times and now it ate all the tips of the teeth off of the starter what could be my problem, i was told my fly wheel could be messed up or it could be the wrong fly wheel that it should have been changed with the motor i dont know any help

Re: starter problems

You should remove the plastic dust shield (holds on with 4 10mm screws) and inspect the flywheel for bad teeth.

Need to get the right starter for the flywheel - there is 153 teeth and 168 teeth - originally the car had a 153 tooth flywheel, but could have been changed with the engine swap - you need to verify the tooth count.

Then should be a simple matter of getting the right starter, shimming correctly on install following the directions.

There are ministarters (smaller, lighterweight, work really well with header clearance) that are able to do either flywheel, and can be had for not much more than regular starter prices. I snagged one off ebay for $80 new, and it's been great!
