smoking like a steam engine out of breather hole! HELP please.
i just installed an 89 block with 70's heads, carburated. starts right up runs smooth but it puffs smoke out of the breather hole on the valve cover. when u hold the hole closed it comes out the dipstick tube. any ideas why its doing this? its so bad that it fills my 2 car garage up in about 30 seconds with smoke. its more white than blue and doesnt really smell like much a little like oil but not a strong oil or smokey smell. if its burning oil whys it coming out the valve cover?

Do you have a PCV hooked up? If not, do so.
Could be excessive blow by but we don't know the condition of the engine...fresh rebuild? a lot of miles on it?

I would have to say you have a blow by issue. Worn rings and scored cylinders.

it was rebuilt less than 5k ago in my tbi 88. i thought it was the valve seals it was burning oil really bad but blowing it out the exhaust so i put a pair of double hump heads on it and a carb into my 84 and now it blows smoke out the valve cover.

Even without a PCV, that speaks of a serious issue: either water in the crankcase, or excessive blow-by. What does the oil look like on the dipstick?
