292 xfi comp cam
Hi guys just wanted to inquire about the 292 xfi comp cam. I'm planning on putting it in a 383 stroker bowtie block with 6" rods. I'm going to get it on a .900 base circle. Motor is running a accel super ram intake. Was wondering if anyone on the forum was running this cam in their setup. I've been asking around about it and a couple of people have told me that the cam actually runs higher rpm that what comp is advertising. Also I'm going to be running comps 918 springs, even though when I called they told me to get these other ones which me and my cousin think that they do not have enough lift for this cam. If you guys can post your opinions about this cam please let me know I always get the best info on this message board.

Re: 292 xfi comp cam
I know of 2 cars that have 292 solid tappet cams that would hit 7700 rpm in a 350 and 7200 in a 400, but they had single plane intakes and carbs. also with 11/1 cr
If your intake, heads, valve springs and cr will allow the cam to hit 7,000 rpms it will, imho.
I think comp under rates all their cams. Everyone I've seen will surpass the rmp ranges. But remember they are posting thing covering all sbc sizes, intakes, exhaust,heads,...well you see what I mean, too many combos so they post well within range in the rpm's. after all how will complain about hitting 7,000 rpm's when the cam cam company said it will go to 6,500..lol

Re: 292 xfi comp cam
If the tech guys at Comp Cams suggested you get another set of springs and the know what your setup is and what cam you're going with, you should listen to them. They know their stuff.

True I went with the 918 because one of there own techs recommended them and I researched them and they seem to handle more pressure than the other ones. I see what your saying about the cam rating wondering what this cam will do in our setup. Guess were going to take it out for a couple of spins and see what the car tells us

SR on 383 maxes out (5500 rpm ) and the big overlap of the 292 (242/ 248 ) might lose you some of the bottom end the SR is good for
Something with similar lift but less duration maybe?
280XFI (230 /236 .575 lift )
