Re: Threw another dang rod

UPDATE GUYS!!!! This is gonna have everyone scratching their heads. At 8:35 PM today (Thursday), I went to my IROC to get my small Maglight to kill all the black widows under my apartment stairs. So I said o what the heck, Im gonna lube up the upper engine. So I cranked the engine and all I heard was the normal clicks of my Bosch III's firing away, the normal engine noise, and the roar of my 80 series Flowmaster muffler. But there was something different, there was no loud clicking or knocking!!!!!!!!!!!! I even went to the extent to rev the engine all the way and I mean I floored it and nothing but music to my ears. It sounds smooth. I turn the IROC on and off a couple times and its sounds good. I have no freakin idea what the heck is going on. I havent had any chance to pull the valve covers to check the valve lash. I cant believe that the noise is gone. ASE doc, has this ever happened in your mech experience. Any ideas what is going on guys?

It seiter gonna be valve lash or the flexplate. Im really leaning toward the flexplate. This is exactly how a cracked flexplate behaves.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. Donut gaskets??? The last time I heard of donut gaskets was back in the early 90's in my moms 1980 Oldsmobile Cutlass. Do 3rd Gens really have donuts? Sorry bro. My IROC doesnt use donuts. And yes. I felt around for any puffs of exaust and nothing. Plus the sounds is diffenitely metal to metal or in that relation.

Id say its the flex plate(They wont do it all the time especially if you shut it off when its on a small bind where its supposed to be)

Check it youll figure out its prolly what it is

The frequency of the sound can tell you a lot about where its coming from. A timing light can give you a good frame of reference as to whether its in the rotating assembly/trans flex plate, or valve train. If the sound happens at the same rate as the timing light firings, its in the valvetrain. If its 2x faster than the timing light firings, its in the rotating assembly or trans.

This is a possibility since the OP had his engine replaced. The bolts must be tightened to 30 ft-lbs, or they will back out, and let the trans hang at an angle, which destroys the front pump.

This is an excellent point. Since the cam rotates at half crankshaft speed, the frequencies are exactly two to one different. The timing light method is very good also.

You mean eaton lifters...they buy their lifters from eaton. They are made somewhere "over there". Yes i agree Comp's lifters for the most part suck.

Re: Threw another dang rod

Well I havent done any testing or inspecting yet (flexplate, or valve lash) but I did take the IROC for a round trip of 25 miles to and from work today. There was no sound other than the clicks of my Bosch III's and the FlowMaster 80 series. Seems like the ticking has gone away by its self. I got some info to why the sound has seized (probable cause). I was told by a friend of mine on this board that I may of had a collapsed lift. Some how the lifters piston may of had gottin stuck due to a forieghn object and it affected the way the checkball controled oil flow. Now There is no more knocking/ticking. Here is the link to a video that I took a few days ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJ0oaNL2ayw .

Re: Threw another dang rod

I am am not sure what to say here. It seems that you really didnt check anything. You never said if you checked the lash on the valves, or the flex plate. you just tried to pin point the noise and thats all that was said. Now you say the noise is gone, but for how long? So I dont understand what was going on. I saw the vids and it sounded to me like lifters. So whats the deal now? is it all better? I dont mean anything rude by this I just wanted to see what the deal was.

Re: Threw another dang rod

Nahh. I took no offense, although it seemed that way in the beginning. I couldnt do anything because its agianst the policy of my apartment complex to open up the hood to work on a car. Besides, here in the Imperial Valley, average temps here in the summer are around 110 *. So it too hot. I would go out and turn on the IROC just to keep the battery charged and thats when I found that the noise was gone. So no, I havent done anything to it. Im just waiting to reach my 3,000 miles so that I can drop in some 10w-30 synthetic and a additive for sticky valves just to be sure.

I wish people around here would post videos like that. Would be a lot easier for a conviction when I arrest them for negligent operation.

You are a moderator here in the messageboard and I dont think JT would like it if you tried to insult or intimidate members. From what I last remembered, the board is to help other members, not intimidate.

Right. I'm not insulting anybody and:

1) Racing belongs in the racing forums
2) Street racing is illegal

My friendly suggestion to you would be to remove the video since it's self incriminating by nature, and to continue discussing your rod/lifter/whatever issue in this thread or maybe even talk about how you got a C4 transmission to bolt into a thirdgen.

Re: Threw another dang rod

If you want to come over and verify the tranny, by all means, come over to cali. I'm not a tranny type of guy. I bought a tranny, took the shops word for it and palo. Que mas quiero. By the way, there tons of thirdgen owners who make tons of illegal mods to their cars. Why you picking on me? Let's keep this thread what it is. I was trying to prove that my IROC now runs fine after I had a engine noise issue. Your comment "
I wish people around here would post videos like that. Would be a lot easier for a conviction when I arrest them for negligent operation" has nothing to do with the thread so stop harassing me.

I just thought it was an interesting topic for discussion. Wasn't calling you a liar. Just was curious how you got it to bolt up.

I'm not harassing you. I pointed out a non direct suggestion. Most people would say "Ahh, maybe I should delete this now". I hear California crushes cars that belong to street racers. Do you really want videos of yourself on youtube??

Re: Threw another dang rod

I don't know if that's true (cali crushing racing cars). Here in my county, if caught racing, license gets suspended, cited, and car gets impounded. From what I know, my video is incriminating on my behalf, but it doesn't give a cop the right to apprehend me. It is evidence which will only bring attention to me, but the police do sometimes get mad and speed even when there is no emergency. I'm not saying that I'm a angel, but everyone has broken the law at one point in their life. If anyone has a problem with the laws, talk to your congressman. I hear you. You claim not to harass me. But I did get offended. Now can we just let this whole mess rest?

My friendly suggestion to you would be to remove the video since it's self incriminating by nature, and to continue discussing your rod/lifter/whatever issue in this thread or maybe even talk about how you got a C4 transmission to bolt into a thirdgen.

I never said I installed a C4 tranny which belongs to the Ford line of cars. I said I have 700R4.

Re: Threw another dang rod

Back to topic maybe? How about we get that much closer to bringing another Thirdgen to life.

People post up videos of racing all the time. Heck half of Youtube is that. WHO CARES?

We all do it at some point, just don't have a video of it. He has a 40 second clip of all out and clearly no immediate danger to anyone. Get off his case man. Not saying it's okay in any way, but it just doesn't matter.

How's the car coming Chevy86 IROC-Z?

Re: Threw another dang rod

hydrolic144, thanks for supporting my view. As for the condition of my IROC, I feel that I can stop worring about the engine now. I was worried about investing more money on a engine from Summit Racing but since the noise stopped, I can now put my worries to rest. I feel better now. I was gonna lose out on about 2 G's but now I can spend my money on other stuff such as weather stripping, another hatchglass/rear spoiler panel that supports the hatch spring loaded trunk cover. So such to list with so little money to spend.

Re: Threw another dang rod

uhmm the noise WILL come back as previously mentioned you NEED to check you flex plate ESPECIALLY before racing it ...you do realize many people have lost feet/legs from flexplate/flywheel failures the sound could be gone due to the flexplate is bound on itself i assure a sound like that just stopping does not meen problem fixed your car is wayy too nice to neglect the noise

im not trying to be a jerk or anything but you have got to check that out man
please keep us updated

Slowmaro87, I had no idea that there's been accidents of that nature. I will take your advice very serious and I will definetely check my flexplate. I appreciate your concern. You've earned a special respect from me. Thanks.

Do you really want videos of yourself on youtube??

for finding noise i use a long screw driver and put my ear to the handle side.

Ok fellow members. I appreciate the support but let's maintain our composure.
The mod may of had gotten out of line but I have already forgotten his comments. Like I said, I will inspect the flexplate. I think we should all chill and watch the Discovery channel. There is a show about the Trade Towers called " 9/11: After The Trade Towers Fell."

yeah
. - got a high. Volume pump. Come to think of it, my oil level was half a quart low just after I heard the noise. So I filled her up and little by little the sound went away.

The V casing has no mount pad for the cross member. This is because the corvette does not use a cross member, but instead holds the transmission in place with the cbeam. Please see attached pictures.

Re: Threw another dang rod

anesthes, enough is enough. Im gonna post a copy of my purchase of the 700R4. Now please note the phone number to Transplant Transmission. Call them and ask what is needed to be done when buying a tranny from them. As a matter of fact, ask for Rob. He will tell you that the core needs to be sent WITHOUT the tail-end housing. So Yes. It is what Rob tells me and yes I have a 87 Corvette with my original tail-end housing. So please anesthes, let it go. I do understand your point about the cbeam but as I began to remember what I did when I recieved the tranny, I remembered that I had to put in my original end housing (and I remember clearly because I had a hard time removing and installing the rear bearing of the housing). Now that I remembered and have cleared up the confusion, can we just get back to the topic?

I'm actually curious how you bolted it up. You are taking this the wrong way.
I had a couple of C4 vette casings a while back, which I could not use in a fbody because it didn't have the cast boss. It took me forever in a day to get rid of them locally..

Yep. I also had a situation a while back with a 700R4 that was making some noise like yours. On the topic of flexplates and flywheels, something hooked onto the flexplate and sawwed through the bell housing inside of maybe a minute or too. Watch your feet!!

Hope you find the problem and hope it's minor.

Re: Threw another dang rod

Im glad we are communicating without butting heads. They just bolted right up. The studs where hard to line up but with a little bit of elbow grease and a couple of cramps later, it worked out. Well it time to eat. I hope that this has not caused any serious issues.
