engine block number?

hey guys

so i have a 92 rs camaro tbi. should be a 305 (auto) but its to strong to be a factory 305. looking at the motor you can tell its been rebuilt/swapped.

so since i had my intake off (replaceing the gaskets bc one of the po did a **** poor job putting it back on) i looked on the driver side...no numbers. so i looked at the passenger side and the number 14098821 was there(the block) however a google search turned up no such thing soooo how do i i.d. my motor to see if its a rebuilt 305 or a 350?

Re: engine block number?

If the numbers were actully 14088551 not 14098821 then its a 305 2 bolt main.

Re: engine block number?

there was nothing behind the left bank ? it should ...being a 92 have a 5.0 or 5.7 stamped on the block ...theres also a tab on the front of the block on the right bank that has like date codes it should also tell you more info on the motor

Re: engine block number?

hey puzzle. the heads and intake appear to be the 305 factory stuff (unconfirmed tho) but the block, on top of not haveing the 5.0 or 5.7 stamp, has a mechincal pump spot (with a plate over it) and get this, its on the passenger side! so ideas?

Are you sure you are looking in the right place? From what I researched in the past, most engine block numbers are on the right hand side (or driver side) behind the dist. near where the block meets the bell housing. Also I know you have already double checked the numbers but make sure you have a good light and all grease and dirt are cleaned away to be absolutely certain of the numbers.

On the '87+ engines ( 1 pce seal cranks ) the 5.0L / 5.7L is on drv side and the block casting # on pass side

Re: engine block number?

This is the information I found:

It is a 1986-92 305 with a 2 bolt main.

Also listed:

305 86-88 Truck.

305 86-88 Malibu.

Re: engine block number?

I have a print out of the GM casting numbers from the old mortec site and it doesn't list that number. Unless you want a 305, look for this number. 10243880. That's the 350 vortec roller cam block that they also used to make the ZZ4 motors and if you're real lucky and find it in a c2500 pickup you may even get lucky and find a 4 bolt main motor.
