code 43 and code 44

code 43 and code 44

Okay I was finally able to get the codes off my 86 trans am and it started with code 12 and the 43 and 44...I know the 12 in normal because of the engine not being on but the power is on...but what is code 43 and 44 and how do I fix it....please help I am a mom trying to help my 17 year old son get his car on the road and drivable before the summer ends.

DTC - 43 Knock sensor error
DTC - 44 Oxygen sensor error (lean condition indicated)

I would consider replacing the knock sensor (located in the engine block itself on the passanger side). If that has no effect I would also look into what is called the ESC module (electronic spark control module). From what I understand the ESC module reads knock counts from the knock sensor and pulls timing accordingly.

For the code 44 I would swap the oxygen sensor and try a new one. I had an '86 that spewed a code 44 for months before I found out it was just a vacuum leak.
