rounded off coolant sensor need help

hey so im doing the wiring part of the swap and tried to use a socket to get the coolant sensor off (the one on the side of block that takes a blue wire) and find out that the nut is already rounded off. I just want to know what the next best approach is. I tried vice grips for 10 minutes but it just kept slipping..

Blue wire is knock sensor. Those are very prone to rounding off and have the added bonus of locktite on the threads

Get a big pair of channel locks to the outer case. It'll wreck the sensor, but you'll get it out. Never a good idea to reuse them anyways

Now is too late, but it's a lot easier to swap the sensors while the engine is out.

can i run the engine with it disconnected for a couple minutes? I'm really just trying to get it running so i can feel secure that there is nothing wrong.

Re: rounded off coolant sensor need help

Neither the knock nor fans switch is required to run. Performance will be crappy with no knock because it's in limp mode

For future reference, knock uses a blue wire and is in the engine block just above the oil pan. Fan switch uses a green wire and is in the cyl head between #6&8 primaries. Connector body changed colors from white to black to gray over the years, often inside of years. Seems like they used whatever was in the bucket when the harness was built

Re: rounded off coolant sensor need help

Hey, I just put in a Fan switch for my 1991 camaro z28. It is a 195 degree on and 180 off fan switch. The part number is 60600 from summitracing website. My problem is I am experiencing issues such as the engine running poorly and it not idling right at all. After a bit of driving the engine seems gutless. I removed the old themostat sensor, which was located on the driver's side of the engine block to put this new one. It was a green wire that led up to the old thermostat switch. Any advice or 2 cents would be great guys. Thanks.

Re: rounded off coolant sensor need help

In the drivers side head is the gauge sender. It has nothing to do with the thermostat or the fans.

Re: rounded off coolant sensor need help

Alright, so its going to be on the passenger side? That would throw off the gauge reading and the engine running. Your not going to believe this, but the direction specifically said that it was either between cylinders 1 & 3, or 6 & 8. Hey I really appreciate your advice. I'll reverse it as soon as I can and let you know. Very much appreciated, Apeiron.

The fan switch is on the passenger side between 6 and 8.
