engine loads up on fuel..WHY!?

Engine: 385 HSR.....LS1
Transmission: 700R4 with Midwest 3400 2.4str...M6
Axle/Gears: SLP Zexel Posi unit 3.42's...3.73's
engine loads up on fuel..WHY!?
what would cause the engine to load up on fuel? like alot of fuel...enough to almost choke the car off at idle while in traffic and under load.
cheap air/fuel gauge just PEGS out RICH!
Changed the O2...still the same.
so what would cause this?
