I dunno' what number that is. IIRC, most casting numbers in the last 25 years on an SBC started with "14".

Using the search function is simple enough it took me about 3 seconds to find out for you.

It's either a L31 Vortec or a ZZ4 crate motor with roller cam.

Full casting # on the rear of block is 10243880
My '00 L31 4 bolt block is same casting

He is looking at the three numbers cast on side of block behind engine mount ; not the full casting number cast on rear

Look on the front pad on the block (under the alt I think) from what I read the ZZ4 has "ZZ4" stamped there.

Re: block # 10243880

recently bought motor
sbc 10243880 crate I gen motor

read i a roller cam, how ever, has std heads, or old style valve covers not center bolt covers. Has all intake bolts at same angle.

the 92-96 chev truck blocks had 2 center bolts on intake to newer style angle heads already, why is this a 96 up with old std heads bolts, and old school valve covers. ???

what is special about roller cam, and would these heads be be correct for block, and cam? could heads be of older motor, and newer block??
have yet to pull head numbers just picked up motor.

has serpentine belt, straight up water neck off set to driver side then up.
has a Mech fuel pump. ??? Huh?? thought all chevy was in tank fuel pump by 87, Motor lists as a 96 camaro motor , crate gen I crate. please any help,,

I have a 272 new Crane cam wanted to use, but little confused on number see angle of intake bolts and oldschool heads valve covers and mech fuel pump. help.

Re: block # 10243880

Because someone put them there.

All that stuff bolts RIGHT UP TO a late-model block, same as to an earlier-model one.

Don't bother asking "why someone did that"; it was a human, and those things are NOTORIOUSLY illogocal and unpredictable. About all you can conclude at this point, is that they did it because they were a human.

Alot of the "crate" motors, as well as the ZZx series, are machined for the fuel pump, because they might well have been used in an application requiring that, and Chevy knows that.

What's special about "roller cam" is, it's a roller. (duh) Instead of having lifters with a nearly flat face on the bottom, they have a little roller wheel. This allow FAR higher ramp rates, lower friction, and better reliability. About THE STUPIDEST thing you could possibly do, is to put a flat system into a roller block if you already have all the roller apparatus in there. Which you'll need to take the intake off and look to see if you do or not.

Because someone may have just bought a late model roller cam short block and fitted their own early heads/ intake

Re: block # 10243880

ok, had swap here today,

3880 motor,

cam, what about a more hotrod muscle car cam?
#s, 284/488? etc what is good on this motor.?

intake , I have a victor jr intake, and a 750 holley ready. gear drive etc.
want a decent street racer style, rap at light and launch the car.

I am use to tappet lifter car. this would be my first roller, need to roll motor over see if is a 4 or 2 bolt. find front "zz4" is by water pump ?? face of block.

if read cam what would be a good cam maybe leave for stamp on end of cam.?? should I just use it?? pending came.

Heads, what is compression, ? one guy said 305 heads make 11.0 compression? possible? what about older 194 / 150 heads?

thankyou for all your help.

Re: block # 10243880

Roller tappets aren't all that much different from flat ones, once the intake is on.

Cam choice will depend on the heads you use. Most likely, the ones that are on it, aren't a good choice; but who knows, you could get lucky. Post up their casting # and we can tell you what they are.

One thing is for sure though; those old generic cams like the "RPM" cam, which is also available from DOZENS of other sources, are NOT the way to go.

Forget the gear drive. Sell that to the next "greater fool" on CL or something, turn it back into cash that you can use for something that actually accomplishes something.

Vic Jr is probably not the best choice either but we'll get to that point later on. In case it's not (which is most likely), see the suggestion about CL.

Re: block # 10243880

I have the same bare block. I'm looking to build a 383 monster. I've already have gotten a Howards cam #180245-12,.501/509 valve 280/292 duration 112 lobe. 1.5 roller rockers. Huge Dart heads. But my ?? is rod size. Do I have clearance for a 6 inch rod, without doing machine work to the block, other then boring for pistons. And if so, what crank stroke can i go with? 5.7 or 6.
