fuel on plugs

Hey fellas I have an 89 trans 5.7 tpi...so I took my spark plugs out and they seem to smell of gas very strong.... Why would that be? Also would that cause my car to bog down and lack of power.. would that cause car to backfire out the exhaust? Some help please? How do I rectify this issue thanks
