What all can I check before determining that the fuel pump is bad?
I just had a fuel pump put in about a year or so ago. It was working fine until I was trying to teach my 16 yr old to drive straight shift.
He kept popping clutch and car kept cutting off. When we got back home, he cut car off. I got in and was going to move car. That's the first sign of trouble. Car didn't want to start. Eventually it started. The 'service engine soon' light was on. I took Camaro to Advance Auto to have it tested, and they told me that they couldn't test 'OBD1', just 'OBD2'. So, I decided to go home and check it myself with jumper wire. When I got in car to leave, it wouldn't start. I went in and bought a can of starting fluid and was going to try that. When I got back to car I decided to try to start it again first. The car started, although I had to pump accelerator. Normally you are not suppose to give it gas to start it, just push clutch in. When it cranked, the 'service engine soon' light was not on. I drove it home. It ran great. When I got home and turned car off, I tried to start it again. It wouldn't start and the 'service engine soon' light was back on.
Through all of this, I was never able to hear fuel pump clicking before attempting to start car. Checked fuse...fuse is ok.
Took stethescope[sp] and listened to 2 relays...one clicks once, the other clicks twice...guy who put rebuilt 350 in Camaro wired fan so it runs all of the time ignition switch is on...I'm thinking that that relay is the one that only clicks once...don't ask 'why' he wired fan to run continuously, I don't know.
Is the relay that clicks twice possibly the fuel pump relay cutting on and off? If so, does that mean fuel pump relay is bad?
