newbie needs help

Ok so I bought a 88 trans am with the lb9. I'm having some problems the fuel pump does don't turn on when the key is turned on. The guy I bought it from said it needed one but the car hasn't ran since 02ish, it went in for a paint job and the prev owner died so now I have the car. I know a pump can't go bad from just sitting around and also it has gas in it and the gauge reads empty. Maybe bad wire somewere? Also the pump gets power last time the guy checked. I have not messed around with it at all. So any help will be good. Thanks

Re: newbie needs help

I would check to see that the pump is getting power regardless. That is the first step into finding out why it is not running. If it is in fact receiving battery voltage, check ground.

Use a test light to see if you have power on pin A of the pump relay (orange wire).

It doesn’t matter what position the key is in.

If you don’t have power there check the inline fuse located near the battery.

If there is power there jump pin A to pin E.

Does the pump run when you do that?

Re: Pump Jump

Ok there's power getting there .I put a new pump in and still noting . There's 3 relays under the hood what one is the fuel pump? And also the gas gauge no longer works its either full or empty what would cause the problem?

Ok there's power getting there.
how did you determine that due to the fact you said “
There's 3 relays under the hood what one is the fuel pump?

Anyway the fuel pump relay is by the booster.

You can identify it by wire colors.

Orange, red, gray, black with a White stripe, green with a White stripe.

So if you jumped pin A to E, and the pump does not run, the pump is defective, or there is a bad connection from pin E to the pump.

RE: Gas gage.

Here’s how to test the fuel gage.

Remove the sender wire going to the gage.

Tape the bare end of the sender wire so and put it aside.

Use a potentiometer with a value of 90Ω or the closest you can find.

Connect one end the potentiometer to the gage from the location you removed the sender.

Connect the wiper of the potentiometer to ground.

Turn the key to RUN.

Slowly adjust the potentiometer from 0Ω to 90Ω.

If the gage is bad it will exhibit the problem you have.

If the gage is good it will display a smooth transition from one end of it’s range to the other.

Therefore the problem is with the sender or wiring going to it.
