Car sitting for 4 years, couple of questions about starting the engine

I have an 87 Camaro with an LG4 that has been sitting for about 4 years. I am in the process of getting it ready to start however I have a question about draining the fuel tank. I know the 87 LG4 has a helper pump in the gas tank to assist the mech fuel pump and was hoping I can use that to drain the old gas out of the tank (had about a half tank of gas when I parked it). I plan on disconnecting the fuel line at the mech fuel pump and using the electric pump to drain the tank. I need to know how to turn that electric pump on?

Any advice on preparing the engine for start would be appreciated. From reading the other threads on starting engines that have been sitting for a long time I have come up with the following:
-Replace radiator fluid (had to do this anyways for a heater core replacement)
-Replace Thermostat
-Check/replace cooling system hoses
-Check/replace vacuum hoses
-Check/replace acc belts
-Change oil/oil filter
-Change tranny fluid/filter
-Change rear-end fluid
-Change fuel filter (how important would it be to rebuild the carb first?)
-New cap/rotor
-New PCV valve
-New mech fuel pump
-New O2 sensor
-Check spark plug wires
-Remove spark plugs (will replace with new ones) and mist each cylinder with oil
-Hand turn crank to distribute oil to cylinder walls
-Crank the engine a couple of times with the starter (checked starter and alt at O'Reilly and both good plus have a new battery) to pump some oil
-Pour a little gas into the fuel inlet on the carb to prime the carb
-Put in new spark plugs and start the engine
-Let it idle to normal temp, check everything for leaks/problems
-If everything looks good then take it for a drive

If this all goes according to plan then I will be fogging up the neighborhood with Seafoam a couple of days after I start it

Re: Car sitting for 4 years, couple of questions about starting the engine

I pulled my car out of a field it had been sitting in for over 11 years and started it on the gas that was in it and it actually ran just fine. Was it the greatest idea? Probably not but I've still never had any problems with the car lol.
What I do is take an air attachment for an air compressor, one of the ones that just sprays compressed air, and blow it in the return line in the engine bay, then all the gas will come out of the main line. I found that out the hard way lol

Yeah, awesome x helped me through it. I got my car started after 11 years. I did all of that and it started up fine. But, now i'm finding that the engine isn't shifting like it should. Be careful for new problems that can occur. It's only been sitting for 4 years so thats not so bad. Good luck.

Personally, I would avoid using any additives, especially SeaFoam. You will probably find that there is already enough water, varnish, and contamination in the fuel. Adding more water from the SeaFoam isn't likely to help.

Fuel filters will be needed. Change them early and often. I wouldn't bother with the fuel pump, radiator, and ignition components unless you have a problem. Those will come soon enough anyway. The main concerns would be lubricants (both engine and transmission), brake fluid (picking up moisture), brake rotors and drums rusted into place, wheel bearing grease that has dried out, rear end gears, bearings, and seals sitting half out of oil for over a decade, and rubber items deteriorating, like coolant and vacuum hoses. The PCV valve can be cleaned, and the O² sensor may not have sustained and harm by just sitting. Your fuel mixture problems are far more likely to arise due to carburetor varnish and sediment than a weak sensor.

Good luck, and take it very easy on the first 50-100 miles of driving while everything starts moving and distributing oils again.

I have done some of the stuff u said. Got all new Rotors, brakes, all fluids changed, oil, and oil filter, fuel filter, grommet replaced on pcv, i shot mystery oil in each cylinder when i changed the spark plugs. I'm not sure what this piece is --> http://i851.photobucket.com/albums/a...e/DSC09156.jpg It is really corroded. Do you know what that piece is called? Also, for some reason, the 3rd gear shifting is really delayed in response. The motor is working extremely hard and i'am not going anywhere Thanks in advanced for ur time. Sorry,i know this isn't my thread.
