Rust removal... Is this a good idea?

I was looking at my block and so far I am very pleased with it! There was one thing I noticed however. The paths where the coolant flows looks kind of red or rusty-ish inside the bare block.

I was thinking of pouring some CLR (that Calcium Lime and Rust product) or something similar into the holes and shaking it up a bit to break up all that rusty looking layer within my block and then rinse it out thoroughly with water before I assemble it.

Because I'm thinking, "That stuff is just going to break off and circulate through my cooling system if I don't right?"

So is that a good idea or should I just leave it alone??????????

If it's just surface rust, I wouldn't worry about it.

Cool, thanks man. Would it be a good idea if it were heavily rusted?

I do not know the name of the product, but they have stuff made specifically to clean water passages. Just ask for it at your local parts store. It never hurts to clean em out.

cooling system flush would be what you're looking for, but what you've got there is normal. your coolant helps to keep that at bay in normal situations. once the engine's in place, run a bottle of the flush through the system to get rid of anything thats built up and follow directions (dont want it left in the system when you go to add your normal coolant)
