A quick cam question.
I have a early 350 motor. Specs are in my Sig. Its in great condition. I want a more lopey idle than stock. Right now the stock cam is in it. I want to keep in pretty mild im not looking to get new heads yet ect.
I was thinking about this cam
Camshaft, Hydraulic Flat Tappet, Advertised Duration 262/272, Lift .420/.442, Chevy, Small Block, Each\
I'm not to familiar with cams will it give me more lope/chop than my stock cam. Anymore power? i'm thinking 10-15hp?

Lift and duration has nothing to do with a lopey idle. All that does is tell you when the valves open and how long they are open. What you are looking for is a cam with a narrow LSA (lobe seperation angle) On most all stock cams they will have one around 120 degrees thats what gives a smooth idle, what you need is one with 112 to 110 degrees. thats were the lopey idle comes in to play. But be warned with a lopey idle you will loose some of the engine vacumn the runs things like the power boster for breakes.
A good choise for cams with the "fake idle" would be the thumper cams by comp cams. But these cams still need things like a high stall converter to run right.
This cam here has a wide range in RPMs

And will give you a lopey idle, and you wont need a stall converter because its RPM range starts at 1200 rpm in most cases thats just off idle.

Re: A quick cam question.
Well I will not be needing a stall converter anyway. I have a manual transmission. Im not worried about lack in brake booster power my car is a weekend warrior. I might see an hour to two hours of run time a month. Most car shows are local and I only drive it back and forth to work which is 5 miles from home.
Thanks that cam looks decent I will keep that in mind. I wasnt sure about lobe separation angle that and another article I read cleared everything up as far as cam choices. Thanks

Killer. Yeah a lot of people dont think about the LSA. Most good street cams will be a 113 or so but when you get to 111 thats about as lopey as you can get without changing a lot.Thats why I showed you the one cam it has a wide useage range and the lopey idle. There are even lower LSA's of 109 but thats to radical for a street rod unless you run a super charger.
I am just glad I could help.

Re: A quick cam question.
What confused me was the summit cams. The description said 110 lobe separation and smooth idle. Other summit cams said 114 and lopey idle. which to me is backwards. I will most likely go with comp cams thumpr which i read good things about street/strip.
I went ahead and emailed comp my specs and comments about what i wanted to achieve. I was hesitant at first to email a cam company because in the past anytime I emailed an aftermarket performance company they tried to sell me on a laundry list of things to upgrade my package far beyond what I needed or wanted. I hope they don't try and sell me on upgraded valve-train and roller configuration.
