cooling fan

At what temp is the cooling fan supposed to come on ?????
1991 V6 Firebird.
Temp gauge got to 210 and the fan never energized. Always ran 175 or so. Just installed new computer but it looks like the fan circuit is isolated by it self.
Any info appreciated

Re: cooling fan

It's way up there. Like 228* or so unless the A/C is turned on. At least the V8 cars up that high. Not sure about the V6s, although when I owned a 91 V6 Camaro I recall the needle would regularly be above the 220* hash mark in stop-and-go warm weather traffic. Never overheated, just built to run hot from the factory.

There's a tech article about the fans and their control circuits and activation temps in the Tech Articles section of this board. I've found the information in it to be very accurate over the years.

Re: cooling fan

You say your fan does not kick on? If that is the case your fan relay may be fried.

Thanks for the reply. Am going to bypass stock relay and install an industrial relay with a variable thermistor of my choosing . This way I set the temp when the fan comes on at a specific temp. or just turn on the A/C switch since I don't use the air.

Re: cooling fan

I rigged up a switch that grounds the temp sensor. It's the green wire that leads to your relay. I did it on both Camaros. In the heat, I run the fans constantly. I'd rather wear out a fan motor, then let the engine get hot.
