Valve job - DIY or ...

I'm wondering - my 305 needs valvr guides pretty badly. is this a project i should be able to do myself - or are there special tools and equipment required. the odds are once i have it apart i will say "well, since its all apart i should probably just throw new valves in as well..." and then i will notice the valves could use grinding or lapping, and then i'll be wondering if it wouldn't have just been easier to send them out to be done..

so i guess its a question of dollars - any ideas what it would cost to have the heads refurbished, if i was to do all of the assembly?

You need equipment to do the guides, stuff you dont have in a garage and wont want to buy either. Pretty much same story for cutting the seats and valves. Are you sure you need new guides?

Exactly doing valve seals is a job you can take on yourself. valve guides no. the heads will need to be completely removed and you'll have to pay someone to do the valve guides and valve job.

ok- well i have the heads off. i was talking to my dad and he said i may not need valve guides, but i most likely needs oil seals. the cars never had them done and its got over 110k miles. He said i could probably do the seals, but if i wanted guides done to send them out and have them done. It does burn alot of oil and one of the plugs looks just like the picture in the back of the haynes manual that mentions valve stem seals.

If i was to just go ahead and get new heads i would probably want to lean a bit more towards performance - can i get a few suggestions for what works well for a street rod, rather than something for the strip?
