Minor Problems with a 90 RS

Hey guys, I'm new here, and well I'm new to Cars, too.

I just bought my first car, a 90 RS, with a 305 LB9 and auto trans. When I bought it, the thing ran fine, started up smooth, and drove just fine. Now, like I said, I'm new to Cars, and I have next to no knowledge of Mechanics, or anything of the sort. So My friend has been helping me out.

Ever since he replaced the Air Intake system, and adjusted the Fuel injection, I've been having a few problems.

If it sits overnight, and I start it up a few things happen:
1: It take a few seconds to turn over, compared to normally instant.
2: A good bit of smoke blows out of the exhaust
3: It Idles fairly High
4: When I shift into Reverse, It will NOT move for a good 10-15 seconds, and then it just pops into gear.

Anybody know what could be causing these things? Just some info: It's sitting inside my garage, with most of the front end removed due to some damage. The hood has been off for a week or so(Dunno if that matters)

Sorry if I sound like an idiot, but I'm pretty new to this stuff.

Thanks for the help guys

Sounds like you need a new friend High idle speed is usually caused by a vacuum leak. What do you mean by a new air intake system? Most likely a vacuum hose was left disconnected. What exactly did he do to adjust your fuel injection? A delayed shift after messing with fuel injection is weird. Check transmission fluid level and condition first.

Re: Minor Problems with a 90 RS

Let me see if I can explain this..

The original intake had a hose connected to it, along with a few wires and such. The new on does not, and the old tube/wires are just sitting there.

And I'm not exactly sure. He told me I was running a little rich, and he was messing with the EFI injectors..I should have paid more attention.

I'll go check the trans fluid in a bit.

EDIT: Here was the Original Intake System.

Here is the New Intake.

Re: Minor Problems with a 90 RS

When you check it, for now just plug those loose vacuum hoses with something. Your idle should go back to normal, but you want to see how the reverse shift behaves as well. There is a vacuum modulator on it. It needs engine vacuum to function properly. Hopefully one of these disconnected vacuum lines do not lead to it.

Did he move the IAT (intake air temperature sensor) over to the new filter assembly? This may or may not be the reason you have dangling wires now.

Glad your back up and running. Have him move that sensor over for you and plug those vacuum lines into whatever they need plugging into and you should be back in business.
