starter going out?

I went to start my car today, started right up. I hear this weird electric motor wirrring sound and shut the car off. Car turns off but the sound is still there. I turn the key to try and start it and nothing happens...but the sound stays. I open the hood, get a wrench and as I'm about to take the - battery cable off, it stops. I started the car just fine...started it about 10 times and it was fine. I think the starter was stuck. Turning but not engaging. Sound logical? Time for a new starter?

Well i had this same thing happen to me not but 3 or 4 weeks ago i replaced the starter nothing so i went and got a new battery and that did the trick but i think my starter was bad any ways!

If it is a stick do the old trick put it down into 2 get it going by someone pushing it and pop the clutch out thats what i had to do

Thanks....I just wanted confirmation I was heading in the right direction. Never had a car do that before.
