I think I'm having starter issues...

When I go to start my 1987 Camaro Sport lately, it won't "turn over" and I hear this whirling kinda sound coming from it. I believe that it is my starter going out. It started happening like a month ago when there was really bad rain storms, then it stopped for a little while. Now its doing it again but its been dry outside.

I have found a starter motor and solenoid switch for about $100 that is compatible with my camaro sport. Can I easily replace it myself instead of taking it to a mechanic?

Yes, it's two bolts on the bottom of the engine. Make sure to disconnect your battery before doing any work. Should only take a half hour at the most.

Would I need any replacement parts then? Or would I have to replace the whole assembly?

Re: I think I'm having starter issues...

check the fusible links first, they're cheap and go bad often. I had them corrode on my firebird and once in a while my starter would click until you turned the key a few times. anyway..

The starter is on piece and is the only thing you have to buy if it needs to be replaced. There are two places wires are connected to. The first is big bolt has the fusible links on it and the second is a smaller bolt that has the purple ignition wire attached to it. Just drop the starter and take it to your local parts store to get tested then post results.

Thank you!! ^^ Evidently, my car didnt start at all this morning so I had it towed to my mechanic. It was the solenoid switch that burnt out.
