Check Engine light or no go

Check Engine light or no go
So my brother has a 84 Camaro with a V6 and an auto. When you start it up and drive it it will randomly die, no matter what you are doing. It varies how long it takes for it to die. it could be twenty minutes or it could be right when it starts. BUT, if you restart it and the check engine light comes on then its good to go for hours. He drove it to Oregon and back (800 miles) that way. Any ideas? Perhaps CO2 censors?
