External pump replacement for in-tank electric

I bought a 1983 Camaro and the fuel pump went bad on me, its mounted inside the gas tank and from what i've heard its a pain in the *** to replace. Im considering just taking out that pump all together and mounting an external pump between the fuel tank and motor, would that work?

It would, if you get an appropriate pump. Do you have crossfire EFI?

Personally, I'd get an aftermarket replacement in-tank pump and install it. Dropping the tank involves dropping the axle and exhaust, but that's the worst of it. If you have proper jacks and jack stands, it is do-able. Of course, you need proper jacks and jack stands to put in an external pump as well.

Re: External pump replacement for in-tank electric

Also it common for a C/F to have no fuel pressure
due to a bad coupler hose in the tank-the hose is made
of foam rubber and is between the pump and the steel
line in the tank-sometimes these turn to goo and fall
off When i first converted my car to C/F,i used an
external pump-first used a "dukes"pump meant for
light aircraft;that worked good but had -8 fittings
making for a clumsy "adaptor stack" switched that for
a nicer fitting inline holley"projection" pump.
the holley pump was rated to deliver 20PSI-good
enough for a C/F
Swapped an original in tank pump in when i did an
axle swap, the two temporary pumps were mounted
in the engine compartment-greater chance of vapor
lock with negative pressure in the line from the tank
but i never had any problems
