Re: how hard or expensive to replace a STEERING RACK

It's super cheap and very easy since 3rd gens don't use one!

Just a steering box (3 bolts hold it to the frame, 2 hose line connections that unscrew out the top, one bolt for the rag-joint slip collar connecting it to the steering shaft and the ball joint-type connection that holds the pitman arm on the bottom of the steering box to the centerlink- which you pop apart with a pickle fork after removing the retaining nut). They're not very expensive- certainly much cheaper than a rack-and-pinion style steering rack and much easier to replace. If you buy a salvage yard steering box it will usually come with the pitman arm still attached which saves you the serious PITA of having to swap the pitman arm to the output shaft of a new box (which requires a special pitman arm removal tool and a lot of elbow grease- eat your Wheaties before tackling that swap!).

You'll usually find that the idler arm on the other side of the frame is shot as well on most cars that haven't seem much service. Beyond that it's a "check and see if there's any play" for the rest of the steering/suspension parts to see if they need replacement. (ball joints, tie rod ends innner and outer).

Might i suggest..

www.thisisthirdgendotorgnotjunk83rabbit.com

In this day and age, why is it nobody searches? REALLY, 99% of the time you find the answer you need instantly.

But really, who comes on a thirdgen dedicated website, asking how to change a rack on a 83vw rabbit?

Who actually puts money into a vw rabbit? haha.

Re: how hard or expensive to replace a STEERING RACK

What's a VW Rabbit? For that matter, what's a VW? There are only 2 brands of cars that we are aware of: GM, which built the super-awesone Camaro and Firebid, and Ford which built the Mustang (which we all rightly hate becuase it sucks- and don't even try to say it doesn't becuase we all agree it does).

Don't come in here and tell us there are more brands to consider because we can't accept that and will hate and shun you (probably throw you off the board for good measure) There is Ford and there is GM. That's it. Choose your side. You should know this already sincve you own several 3rd Gen Camaros.

Perhaps you are suffering from a gas leak in your house. You should get out now and call the local utility company. Further exposure could prove fatal. We only mention this becuase we care about our board members, even those who have the misfortune of owning a VW.

It all depends on were you get the rack. Look to spend about 200 dollars or more. It is a straight forward change out job excapt the alingment. But I highly recomend you find a VW board. Here we deal with anerican cars and as you can see GM.
