Unusual motor mount issue?

Hey, this issue is regarding a 5.7L L98 going into a 1987 IROC. I'm trying to finish an engine install, but the entire engine/transmission assembly is sitting too far forward by about 3/4" - 1". As a result, I can't bolt the Y-pipe to the headers because the oil pan is too close to the K-member.

I believe that the mounting brackets are installed on the correct sides of the block and the clam shells are installed using the correct holes on the K-member. I have tried to lift and reposition the engine in the bay, but it continues to sit too far forward.

I am currently going nucking futs over this! Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated.

A bump a day brings the answers my way (hopefully).

I am by no means an expert but it sounds like your mounts are installed incorrectly on the k-member.

Is it the stock engine, etc?

Re: Unusual motor mount issue?

Yeah, stock engine, 350 tpi, 700-r4 transmission. I am going to recheck everything this afternoon, it just doesn't make sense. The only things I can come up with are:

1. Engine brackets are distorted
2. Engine brackets can be adjusted on the block front to back
3. Clamshell mounts on the K-member can be adjusted front to back

So yeah, they may be installed too far forward on the K-member. However, I did triple check that they are using the correct hole/bolt pattern on the K-member so I assume it must be one of the above three issues. I just was not aware of any such adjustment. Hopefully I will find my answer one way or another by tonight. I really hope those brackets are not distorted.

Re: Unusual motor mount issue?

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SUMMIT STRIKES AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just went to my garage and on a whim decided to check the exact measurements of my new oil pan to my original one and what do you know, the sump on my new one sits about an inch closer to my K-member than my old one did, creating the clearance issue that I have been blaming on my motor mounts!

I guess I shouldn't be too critical of Summit; I have spent enough money there and use them often enough where they are bound to screw up here and there(and they certainly do). But considering the time, and often times money, that one wastes as a result of one of their screwups, I think I am entitled to be a little frustrated, especially since in my case this would be about the eleventh time.

Anyway, thanks wildjyoung and anyone else who wasted their time trying to figure this one out.

when I changed motors in my 82 T/A it's exhaust was up against the oil pan while on stands. when it was taken off the stands it the had clearance ... don't ask me why maybe front frame flex.

Re: Unusual motor mount issue?

Yeah I had actually considered that and dropped the car to be sure, but still had the same clearance issue. That's when I started to think motor mount brackets or something because I had to kind of jimmy the thing down onto the mounts. I figured I must have bent the brackets out of shape. Unfortunately the clearance between the oil pan and the y-pipe is pretty tight to begin with, so just that extra 3/4" or so on the aftermarket pan makes it impossible to bolt the y-pipe to the header. From now on I will PRECISELY measure parts that appear identical to one another. Lesson learned.
