Why not a hood scoop?

I've been getting ready to buy a Cowl hood (got the 14x3 open element with open top already) for a while now, but I just had a thought... Why don't many third gen owners do hood scoops? Like these kind...

or...

Wouldn't it be even better air flow? Why is it not seen ever with our cars?

I'm talking more the bolt\weld on kind that simply cover an air filter. But where did you get that hood?

Re: Why not a hood scoop?

Its just a regular "SS camaro" hood. http://www.hawksthirdgenparts.com/ca...-92sshood.aspx

There is a guy here on TGO that has a bolt on scoop. I don't like it personally but a lot of people do.

Does your hood have an opening that an open air element filter would fit though or something else?

Its not mine, and I know that some are functional. I don't know if they come that way or are hacked up a bit to make functional. Use the search feature.

They're not practical on a street driven car. The biggest disadvantage is they allow rain/snow etc into the engine. They also restrict vision.

On a drag car, this isn't an issue but scoops also catch a lot of wind. My simple scoop starts to lift the back of the hood by mid track when I'm doing over 110 mph.

Re: Why not a hood scoop?

Its rare that a bolt-on scoop actually looks good on a 3rdgen. They work on alot of other cars, but not 3rdgens. The only scoops that look good (IMO) are stuff like SS hoods or cowl induction hoods - but then you are buying, fitting, and painting a whole hood, which is expensive. Not alot of 3rdgen owners have $1000 to burn on just a hood.

That said, I got a steel cowl induction hood for my '83 Z28 - but I needed it. Its the only way I was going to get a hood to close over my BBC, because I HATE air cleaners that stick up through the hood with nothing over top of them.
