Choke and run over issues. HELP!

1984 Z28 H.O. Carbed all stock

Choke light went out and the car started idling about 1500 rpm in park and 700 in drive with the brake on.

Took it to mechanic shop who happens to be my neighbor.

Said he fixed the electric choke and adjusted the idle. Idled at 500 no problems... for the first day.

Now I never know what the rpms are gonna be at. It can go from 1500-2000 and then from 500-1000.

I dont want to give him anymore money! Any suggestions as to what the problem is?

I had a post up when the problem first happened and the choke coil was braught up. Could this be why?

And since the idle has been high the engine keeps having run over(i beleive thats what its called. I turn the key off and the engine seems to wanna keep running.) My parents tell me that it was ok for it to happen that it did back in their age. When it happens all i want to do is close my eyes and plug my ears. I FEAR the engine is going to blow.

Im in a rush but am on alot so dont hesitate to ask any questions. Thanks.

Is the choke wire connected? The choke coil has continuity to ground?

Re: Choke and run over issues. HELP!

Take your car back to whoeve ryou took it to, and have them UNDO whatever they did, because WHATEVER it was, it was WRONG.

The "Choke" light is not the Choke light. It is only called that because when the thing happens that it's REALLY warning you against, the choke stays shut, makeing the car have higher emissions than it should. I guess, in this day and time, that that's thought to be a good excuse for mislabelling something.

That light is REALLY the ALTERNATOR light. If it comes on, it's because your ALTERNATOR is not working.

It is supposed to come on when you turn the key to On with the engine not running. If it doesn't, your ALTERNATOR will probably NEVER work.

Go get the idiot to un-screw-up your car and put it back like it was. Then make sure the light works as described. Then go to the parts store and get an alternator and put it on. Assuming that whatever "fix" the moron did to your car didn't permanently destroy something (like, hacking the wires or some other hilljack stupidity) then all should right with the world once again.
